Fred Wilson (Charles Grodin), an employee of a large American oil company, is tasked with locating new oil sources. He embarks on a journey to an uninhabited island in the South Pacific on a chartered boat. Also on board is a stowaway: the paleontologist Jack Prescott (Jeff Bridges), who has smuggled himself onto the ship because he wants to study a rare species of monkey on the island. During the journey, the expedition picks up the shipwrecked Dawn (Jessica Lange), who is drifting in a lifeboat at sea, after a violent storm. However, when the ship anchors off the island, it turns out that it is not as uninhabited as everyone assumed. The native inhabitants perform a strange ritual to honor a giant ape named "Kong." When they spot the blonde Dawn, they believe they have found their sacrificial offering.
John Guillermin remade the classic film "King Kong and the White Woman" in 1976, starring Jeff Bridges and Jessica Lange. At the 1977 Academy Awards, Carlo Rimbaldi, Glen Robinson, and Frank Van der Veer received a Special Achievement Award for the film's special effects. Additionally, the film received nominations for Best Cinematography and Best Sound. Jessica Lange was honored as Best Newcomer at the Golden Globes that same year.
