Mendel Singer is a Jewish Bible teacher in the Russia of the Tsar. Always striving to obey the laws of God, he does his utmost to provide for his family. But it is not only the epilepsy of his youngest son that puts his faith to the test - the Singer family is constantly suffering new blows of fate that deeply shake Mendel's piety.
