In Japan, the world is everywhere inhabited by nature spirits known as yōkai. One such being is the shark that a man meets on a bridge, who is desperate because he has been cast out from the palace of the sea dragon. The man takes pity on him and grants the shark-man asylum in his pond. When his savior lies lovesick because he cannot pay the bride price for his beloved, the shark-man is so distressed that he weeps tears that eventually solidify into sapphires. The Japanese master Hearn tells such stories masterfully, and Jürgen Uter or Anne Moll read them just as skillfully.
