The young Jakob von Gunten begins an apprenticeship as a servant at the mysterious boys' school 'Institut Benjamenta' in Berlin. At the top of the curriculum are obedience and patience. The sole aim of the institution is to shape and subjugate the boys until they become what they are destined to be: "a charming round zero." However, Jakob is different from his classmates and wins the heart of the headmaster - with unforeseen consequences.
