At high school, 18-year-old Keith is considered a bore and is avoided by his classmates. Keith is passionate about painting and works part-time at a gas station. His father is determined that he attend college. However, Keith wants to study art and is too afraid to tell his father. His only confidante is the tomboyish Watts, a girl with a short haircut who plays the drums and has no interest in school. To Keith, she is just a buddy, but Watts has deeper feelings for him. One day, Keith falls head over heels for Amanda, the most sought-after girl in high school.
