With Homer's "Iliad," European literature began. In 15,500 verses, this timeless epic of humanity tells the story of Achilles' wrath and the war over Troy. Triggered by Paris' abduction of Helen, the most beautiful of all women, a years-long war rages between the Greeks and the inhabitants of Troy. In dramatic individual scenes, man confronts man, battles are fought for the lives of friends, and mourning is felt for loved ones. The brutal slaughter is further fueled by the personal feud between the Greek Achilles and his commander Agamemnon. Achilles appeals to the gods for vengeance - even at the cost of his own defeat.
