One hundred years of loneliness

With his novel One Hundred Years of Solitude, Gabriel García Márquez achieved breakthrough success as a writer in 1967. This modern classic of world literature tells the story of the rise and fall of the Buendía family and the village of Macondo that they founded, which initially appears to be a paradise. Cut off from the rest of the world by swamps, jungle, and an impenetrable mountain range, it is the place where all human dreams, nightmares, and discoveries seem to repeat themselves once again. The new translation by Dagmar Ploetz highlights the different stylistic levels of the novel more strongly than the previous German version: pathetic, witty, terse, epic, and poetic. This allows for a perspective on the world that still effortlessly withstands the experiences of the 21st century.
