Hölderlin

Friedrich Hölderlin: Underestimated by his contemporaries, elevated to myth status by his admirers. Friedrich Hölderlin is the great unknown among the classics of German literature: a genius of the interplay of philosophical, religious, and poetic power. A loner who found no stability in life, despite loving devotedly and being loved in return. As a poet, translator, philosopher, tutor, and revolutionary, Hölderlin lived in tearing tensions, under which he ultimately collapsed. Deeply wounded emotionally, he spent the second half of his life in the Tübingen tower. It was not until the 20th century that his true significance was discovered.
