Heidi's Aunt Dete lives in Frankfurt, in the house of a wealthy merchant. Dete takes care of the disabled daughter Klara there. She believes that the little, cheerful Heidi could bring joy to the poor girl who lives in a wheelchair. Heidi is reluctant to leave her grandfather, with whom she lives in a mountain hut. In Frankfurt, the two girls quickly become friends. Klara becomes more cheerful and lively in Heidi's company. However, Heidi feels homesick in the big city, which she does not like at all: She misses her grandfather, her friend Peter, and the mountains.
