A life in dark caves and tunnels is the everyday reality for 14-year-old Simon, who lost his parents at a young age. The surface of the earth is taboo, as people believe that no life is possible there anymore. They fear earthquakes and diligently go about their daily work. Simon's task is to help expand the cave, and during the excavations, he discovers a mysterious talisman that he takes with him. His friend Kamina, on the other hand, wants to explore the world above ground and convinces him to join his Gurren Brigade. However, before they can venture upward, a giant Gunman invades their habitat and seeks to destroy all life. Only with the help of a stranger named Yoko is Simon able to activate his own Gunman, Lagann.
