The spear-wielder Balsa leads a restless life as a wandering bodyguard. Although many consider her a mercenary, Balsa fights for a higher purpose: having once sworn to never kill and to save lives whenever possible, as much blood was shed to keep her from death. When the warrior returns to the Empire of New Yogo after more than two years, she witnesses a terrible accident where the eleven-year-old Prince Chagum falls from a bridge into a raging river. Acting quickly, Balsa jumps into the water and saves the emperor's second son from drowning with her last strength. In gratitude, the empress invites Balsa to the palace and reveals to her a sinister secret. For several months, signs have been increasing that the young prince is being controlled by a foreign power. The emperor is convinced that it is the reincarnation of a demon once defeated by the founder of the imperial dynasty. To prevent the demon from returning, the emperor plans to have his own child killed. At the empress's request, Balsa takes the boy under her protection and flees the palace with him. Shortly after their escape, Balsa discovers the true secret behind the power that has taken hold of the boy. Chagum houses the egg of a water spirit, which is reborn every hundred years to make the land fertile again. Thus, Chagum carries the fate of the entire empire within him - and Balsa must protect his life at all costs.
