After the accidental death of her husband, the impoverished Corinne returns with her four children to her parents' vast, remote estate. It is the first time in 17 years that she sees her devoutly religious parents again, as Corinne was disowned and cut off from her father's inheritance when she chose to marry her own uncle. Consequently, her reception is 'warm' in a different sense. While Corinne continues to endure her mother's humiliations, the four children are locked away in the attic of the estate. Initially, the children accept this treatment, believing that their mother will be reinstated in the will due to these measures, as their father must not know of their existence. However, the children, isolated from the outside world, are not the only secret housed within the walls of the opulent estate, as their grandfather has long since passed away.
