The eccentric Brian Sweeney Fitzcarraldo is obsessed with the idea of building a grand opera house in the heart of the untouched Amazon jungle. With the savings of his girlfriend, the brothel owner Molly, Fitzcarraldo buys an old riverboat.

He intends to sail it into an unexplored rubber region to raise funds for the construction. Rubber is considered the gold of the jungle. To bypass the dangerous rapids of a river mouth, the obsessed man devises a breathtaking plan: hundreds of indigenous people are to transport the massive ship over an impassable jungle height.
