With his main work, the "Essais," the jurist, politician, and philosopher Michel de Montaigne established the art of essay writing in the last third of the 16th century. In his treatises on diverse topics such as vanity, child-rearing, and cannibalism, he critically engaged with the interpersonal relationships of his time, drawing on personal experiences in an associative manner.
