In the 1930s, during the time of the currency restriction: Anyone wishing to enter Austria from Germany is not allowed to carry any money. This also applies to the wealthy Georg, who crosses the border daily to attend the Salzburg Festival. This has its advantages: How else would Georg have met the lovely Konstanze?

When he is unable to pay the bill at a café, the chambermaid helps him out. Georg falls in love with her, but soon learns that she, along with the rest of her family, is posing as staff at her father's castle to assist her father, a farce playwright, with his situational studies. To stay close to Konstanze, Georg plays along with the masquerade.
