A young couple returns to Saxon Switzerland after years. The narrator hides from his girlfriend that he is driven by a sense of guilt towards Vito, the school friend who lost a leg during their climbing accident. He seeks forgiveness and recalls the incident, the public reprimand at school during the socialist flag ceremony, and the fracture.
