Product details

A classic of literary history. Ernest Hemingway was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1953 for his novella "The Old Man and the Sea." Just a year later, the author received the Nobel Prize in Literature. In the short story "The Killers," published in 1927, Nick Adams, a recurring character in Hemingway's works, witnesses a robbery at a diner. Two gangsters are looking for a former boxer named Ole Andreson, and murder seems inevitable. "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber," published in 1936, tells the story of a big game hunt in Kenya. Francis Macomber, who fails to kill a wounded lion, is humiliated by his wife Margot as she shamelessly flirts with the hunter Robert Wilson. The plot takes an unexpected turn when Macomber successfully kills a buffalo. Hemingway vividly depicts the lives of serving people of color and (wealthy) whites, their power struggles, and their misery. Hemingway is considered a master of brevity; a story, according to the author, is like an iceberg: most of it lies below the waterline, unseen, yet it determines the meaning. The writer Ulrike Draesner and the dramaturg and author John von Düffel engage in a conversation about Hemingway's narrative art, his ideals of masculinity, and the specific intelligence of literature. This event series is organized by LpZ Stuttgart and DerDiwan Audiobook Publishing, supported by the Ministry of Culture, Youth, and Sports of Baden-Württemberg. Anne-Dore Krohn moderates, and Timo Brunke delivers the prologue and epilogue.
