A village in the Kyrgyz steppe during the Second World War: married Dshamilja and war-disabled Danijar meet here. Danijar's beguiling singing captivates the cheerful woman, she cannot escape him and falls in love with him. It breaks with all conventions. Her young brother-in-law, who is supposed to protect her from men and also has his own feelings for the beautiful woman, allows the couple. But when Dshamilja's husband returns from the war, the situation escalates and the two lovers have to leave the village.
