For years, woodcarver Mr. Meacham (Robert Redford) has delighted the neighborhood children with stories about a wild dragon that lives in the deep forests of the Pacific Northwest. For his daughter Grace (Bryce Dallas Howard), a ranger in the area, these stories were nothing more than legends until she meets a boy named Pete (Oakes Fegley). The mysterious ten-year-old has neither family nor a home and claims to live in the woods with a gigantic green dragon named Elliot. Remarkably, the creature from Pete's descriptions bears a striking resemblance to the dragon from Mr. Meacham's stories. Along with eleven-year-old Natalie (Oona Laurence), the daughter of sawmill owner Jack (Wes Bentley), Grace takes it upon herself to uncover Pete's origins and the mystery of his dragon.
