Deep Impact

When fourteen-year-old Leo Biedermann (Elijah Wood) joined his high school's astronomy club, he didn't expect to make world-changing discoveries. In fact, he didn't expect to make any discoveries at all – he was more concerned about being noticed by his classmate Sarah (Leelee Sobieski). However, after taking a photo through his telescope on a field trip, he becomes a co-discoverer of the comet Wolf-Biedermann – which is on a direct collision course with Earth.

Ambitious news reporter Jenny Lerner (Tea Leoni) believes she is on the trail of a Washington sex scandal when she questions a visibly nervous politician about a mysterious "Ellie." Instead, she soon finds herself at a secret meeting with President Tom Beck (Morgan Freeman). In exchange for two days of confidentiality, he offers her the story of a lifetime: news of an impending comet impact and a bold, risky space mission to divert the comet's path and save Earth. For this mission, former astronaut Spurgeon Keeney (Robert Duvall) is brought out of retirement. He is to command an international crew to fly to the comet and either break it apart with nuclear explosives or alter its trajectory to avoid collision. Meanwhile, bunkers are being constructed on Earth where a select few people and animals may survive the impact.
