"The Leper" is the most famous Polish melodrama and an absolute bestseller of interwar literature. The novel, published in 1909, transports us to the 19th century – a world full of balls, palaces, exalted ladies, and the omnipresent aura of nobility. However, it is also a world rife with intrigue and aristocratic conventions. Does the mesalliance between the poor governess Stefania Rudecka and the wealthy landowner Waldemar Michorowski stand a chance of survival in such a reality? The novel, which was adapted into film twice before the war, remains highly popular to this day. The main characters – Elżbieta Starostecka and Leszek Teleszyński in the third film adaptation of the novel from 1976 directed by Jerzy Hoffman – created roles that became enduring classics of Polish cinema.
