Two travelers, John Cort and Max Huber, along with the ten-year-old Llanga and their guide, bearers, and oxen, formed a caravan that crossed the Ubanga River to return to Liberville with an invaluable cargo of ivory.

In the evening, the camp was set up at the foot of a tamarind grove, fires were lit, and the bearers unloaded the cargo, stacking it next to the wagon. Peace reigned, the scent of roasted meat filled the air, and nothing hinted at the impending disaster. Suddenly, the resting travelers were disturbed by a distant sound, or rather, by a concert of prolonged roars and nasal grunts, as if a gigantic organ were sending powerful sound waves across the plain. Amidst the loud roaring, a distinct trumpet-like sound, piercing like a locomotive whistle, could be heard, leaving no doubt that a herd of elephants was approaching the camp. Had they lost their way?.
