Conan (Arnold Schwarzenegger) is the only member of his family to survive the brutal attack by the horde of Thulsa Doom (James Earl Jones) when he was a small child. In search of metal, Conan's village in the snowy northern land of Cimmeria is attacked and destroyed. The people of Thulsa Doom mercilessly kill the villagers, and Conan watches helplessly as his mother is beheaded by the leader of the horde.
Along with other surviving children, he is taken into slavery. After many years of hard labor, he matures into a muscular man and is trained as a gladiator by his master, fighting in arena battles. Once he regains his freedom, he sets out to avenge his parents' deaths and to uncover the mystery of steel, which, according to a prophecy, grants the highest powers. After acquiring a sword and finding a reliable companion in the Mongol Subotai (Gerry Lopez), he seeks his fortune in Zamora, the kingdom of King Osric (Max von Sydow). There, they learn of a mysterious snake cult that has spread throughout the land.
In the Snake Tower, a temple of the cult, a legendary jewel is guarded. Subotai and Conan decide to steal the ruby, but they are not the only ones after the gemstone: Valeria (Sandahl Bergman), the queen of thieves, is also planning to sneak into the temple.
Inside the temple, the three manage to reach the precious stone, and Conan discovers an emblem depicting a two-headed snake in the sanctuary of the mysterious snake cult—exactly the symbol Thulsa Doom carried as a standard when he attacked Conan's village years ago.
The thieves are caught and brought before King Osric, who promises them freedom if they rescue his daughter Yasimina from the clutches of Thulsa Doom, who has since become the leader of the feared snake cult. Valeria, Subotai, and Conan prepare to rescue the princess and defeat the cruel leader of the cult, Thulsa Doom, once and for all.
