Sometimes going back to the past is the only chance to save the present

It's winter in North Carolina. As the temperatures drop, so does the crime rate, and forensic anthropologist Tempe Brennan can take care of her daughter Kathy, who has returned to civilian life after her stint in the army. But then mother and daughter make a gruesome discovery on the porch: a package containing a human eyeball. More macabre finds soon follow; there seems to be no connection between the cases - except for this one: All of them evoke memories of violent acts that Tempe has analysed or experienced herself. And then suddenly Katy has disappeared.
