With nothing but a thimble in his pocket, the unemployed tailor apprentice Wenzel Strapinski unintentionally becomes the projection screen for the petty bourgeois of Goldach. When a finely dressed gentleman steps down from a carriage, clad in a Sunday suit and fur hat, everyone is certain: He must be a count! They quickly treat him to all sorts of delicacies and generously welcome him into their midst. A girl even wants to marry him. But it doesn’t take long for the house of cards to collapse - Wenzel finds himself cast out by society, lying in a roadside ditch.
