Bouvard and Pécuchet

The two simply-minded Parisian office workers, Bouvard and Pécuchet, unexpectedly coming into wealth, retreat to a country estate to indulge their research impulses without interruption. They attempt to explore all fields of modern science – and fail miserably in every discipline. The more they indulge in their dilettantism, the worse their relationship with the local villagers becomes. Flaubert's last, unfinished novel is a skillful satire on the faith in science of his time.
