Cologne, September 6, 1959: In the bourgeois home of the Fähmel family, the 80th birthday of the family patriarch is celebrated. On this fateful day, three generations of architects come together, and the pristine white tablecloths quickly give way to an unmanageable past that intrudes upon the family's outward calm. Heinrich Böll guides his characters along associative streams of memory back to World War II and the Nazi era, reaching back to the beginning of the 20th century, and raises the question of individual responsibility in the face of the opportunistic masses.
