Berlin, 1938: The merchant Otto Silbermann finds himself as a restless traveler on the trains of the German Reichsbahn after the November pogroms and his escape from Berlin. Relatives and friends have been arrested or have disappeared. All that remains for him is a briefcase full of money. In the carriages, on platforms, and in train station restaurants, during his journeys across the country, he encounters other travelers, refugees, and Nazis, both good and bad people. Never before has one been able to so vividly experience how life-changing the November pogroms were for each individual in Germany.
