His most frustrating case: Former Commissioner Maigret can't please anyone. Maigret has been retired for two years. Instead of chasing criminals, he only hunts potato beetles in his garden. But then a determined old lady appears and demands that the ex-commissioner investigate the death of her granddaughter. Monita drowned, and her grandmother is convinced that someone helped her along the way. Thus, the retired commissioner heads to Orsennes, where the deceased lived. However, he encounters rejection from all sides. Strangely enough, the grandmother soon pressures him to stop the investigation. Maigret wonders why he even got involved in this matter. And it gets worse. He is threatened, attempts are made to blackmail him, and he is even shot at. Maigret's 26th case takes place in Meung-sur-Loire and the fictional town of Orsennes on the Seine.
