Jack Aubrey receives his first command, the rather small and old cannon brig Sophie, which has two masts and 14 cannons. In Menorca, he befriends the doctor and naturalist Stephen Maturin, gaining a ship's surgeon in the process. Jack is an exceptionally skilled sailor and very tactically adept; in addition to honor and promotion, he also wants to capture valuable prizes, the worth of which was shared by officers and the crew at the time. However, on land, he is clumsy and often creates problems for himself. Maturin can often, but not always, step in to help.
