Astrid Lindgren: Tomte Tummetott and the fox

Tomte Tummetott, a little old gnome with a red pointed cap and a beard, has lived in a hayloft for centuries. At night he comes out to watch over the inhabitants of the farm.
When people and animals are asleep, Tomte Tummetott comes out of his hiding place. He is the good house spirit of parents, children, chickens, cows and sheep. On cold winter nights he encourages them and makes sure that no harm comes to them. And nobody ever saw him, at least until that night...
The hungry fox Mikkel sneaks onto the farm. Due to the winter he has not found food for a long time and the chickens are a welcome prey. But luckily there is Tomte Tummetott!
