German East Africa at the beginning of World War I: Boat captain Charlie Allnutt (Humphrey Bogart) supplies a settlement with his small riverboat "African Queen," where the devout Methodist Rose Sayer (Katharine Hepburn) lives with her brother Samuel (Robert Morley). After the unexpected destruction of the settlement, the rough and freedom-loving Charlie feels responsible and takes the spinsterish Rose aboard, who makes his beloved carefree life difficult with her strict morals. John Huston's film adaptation "African Queen" is arguably one of the most beautiful love stories from Hollywood in the 1950s and has established itself as a timeless classic of adventure cinema, nominated for four Oscars in 1952, one of which Humphrey Bogart won for Best Actor. "The hero is a proletarian," Huston described the film character to his friend Bogart, "and you are the biggest proletarian in town, making you perfectly suited for the role." With the casting of Katharine Hepburn as the perfect counterpart to Bogart, Huston achieved a stroke of genius that also paid off at the box office. The screenplay by John Huston and James Agee was based on the novel of the same name by C.S. Forester. For the exterior shots, the director traveled with the actors and a 34-member crew to the then Belgian Congo and Uganda, where the filming was nearly as exciting as the film's plot itself.
