Larry Gropnik actually leads a quiet life in a small Jewish community in the Midwest of the USA. He is a loving husband, caring father, and successful professor. But suddenly, nothing seems to go as usual. Larry's wife suddenly demands a divorce so she can live with her self-satisfied new lover. His son is skipping school, his daughter is stealing from him to finance a nose job. His mentally unstable brother just sits on the couch. And as if the family didn't already have enough problems, Larry's career also starts to falter: anonymous letter writers spread false accusations about him, and a student tries to bribe him. Larry seeks help and hopes to find it with a rabbi. But that's easier said than done.
