Germany, 1912: The young engineer Friedrich Zeitz gets a job as secretary to the industrialist Karl Hoffmeister. When he meets his much younger wife Charlotte, he immediately falls in love with her. Although she feels the same for him, Charlotte keeps him at a distance. But the mutual affection of the two does not remain hidden from Karl either and he sends Friedrich to Mexico for two years. In view of the impending separation, Frederick and Charlotte confess their love to each other and promise to wait for each other. But the outbreak of the First World War not only prevents Frederick's return, but also any contact with each other. A long period of uncertainty and longing begins ...
