A hero of our time

To escape the boredom and weariness of life, the aristocratic officer and bon vivant Petschorin plays a scheming game with love and makes people dance like marionettes. But in the end, this master of manipulation is a pitiable figure who reflects on his own absurd behaviour with a razor-sharp mind and breaks down as a result. "A Hero of Our Time", published in 1841, is Mikhail Lermontov's only completed work of prose. He died in a duel in the same year, aged just 26.
