Bryan Mills (Liam Neeson), a former top government agent, has retired to Los Angeles to be near his ex-wife Lenore (Famke Janssen) and their daughter Kim (Maggie Grace). He struggles in vain to connect with the spoiled seventeen-year-old, who has been living in a world of luxury since Lenore married a wealthy businessman.

Under pressure from Lenore, Bryan agrees to let his daughter travel to Europe. Kim flies to Paris with her school friend Amanda, where the two teenagers fall into the clutches of human traffickers who systematically target the locations of young female tourists.

Bryan helplessly listens to the brutal kidnapping over the phone. He has only 96 hours to rescue his daughter from the grasp of the internationally operating smuggling organization before she disappears forever...
