The remarkable story of the Blackwell family from the late 1880s to the 1940s: Kate Blackwell is still young when her father, Jamie McGregor, moves the family to South Africa around 1880 to seek his fortune in the diamond mines there. He quickly becomes wealthy and establishes his first company, Krüger-Brent, Ltd. Over the next 70 years, the company steadily grows under Jamie's and then Kate's leadership, becoming one of the largest enterprises in the area. However, Kate is dissatisfied with her life: despite financial success, her family is plagued by one disaster after another.
