Does the system also work for USM tables where the tabletop (2 cm) lies on a metal frame which is also 5 cm thick?

The clamping mechanism can be opened to a maximum of about 4.5 cm. Not like this.
With a bit of tinkering, you could replace the screw with a longer one. However, I cannot judge whether this would fit satisfactorily.
