does the app have to be open to receive the deep discharge notification or do you receive a push notification even if you are connected but the app is not open?

Unfortunately, the app must be open. There is no notification function at all. You also have to stand very close to the bike to get current battery values. It does what it needs to do, but it could be more luxurious.
