This plant has been awarded the Suisse Garantie label.
The black elder, botanically known as Sambucus nigra, is a native plant that grows well in both sunny and semi-shady areas and can reach a height of around 6 metres. This elder is particularly suitable for wild hedges as it plays an important role in the ecosystem and provides a valuable food source for animals.
The flowering period of the black elderberry is from June to July. During this time, the plant is characterised by its white flowers. These flowers attract numerous insects and are therefore particularly valuable for promoting biodiversity in the garden.
As a hardy plant, the black elder is well suited to all climate zones and can easily survive the cold months. In addition, the elderberry is often valued as a bird food plant, as the berries are a valuable source of food for birds in autumn. However, the berries are only safe for humans when cooked, for example in jam or juice.
Caution: The bark, leaves and unripe berries of the black elderberry contain sambunigrin, which can be poisonous if consumed. The consequences are nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and shortness of breath.
Note: Please note that the plant may look different from the pictures depending on the vegetation cycle.
