Tulip magnolia
80 cmProduct details
The tulip magnolia, Magnolia x soulangiana, is the most well-known and widely planted magnolia. Its large, tulip-shaped, white-pink flowers appear even before the leaves begin to sprout. Particularly in older plants, they bloom in astonishing abundance. Unfortunately, late frosts often bring a sudden end to this floral splendor. The petals then turn brown within a few days and fall to the ground.
Magnolia x soulangiana grows broadly and reaches a height of 4 to 6 meters, with a width of up to 4 to 6 meters as well. It is a slow-growing plant, typically growing 30 to 60 cm per year.
Spring and autumn are the best planting times, but container plants can be planted year-round. The planting hole should be twice as large and deep as the root ball. Remove the pot, loosen the root ball, place the plant in the hole, fill it with soil, press down firmly, and water thoroughly.
The plant has a moderate water requirement.
The tulip magnolia is relatively low-maintenance and is especially recommended for inexperienced plant lovers. Tip: This plant should not be pruned. Only remove broken or diseased branches in the summer. Newly planted, young plants require winter protection during severe frosts. Water this plant only with lime-free water. Rainwater is particularly suitable for this purpose.
Planting should take place from March to October, and fertilizing from March to April. The plant should be watered from April to October and pruned back from May to June.
