Wahingtonia Palm
This fan palm with its slender trunk and bright green fan leaves is excellent as an indoor plant and can be cultivated outdoors in temperate zones. It grows quickly and is extremely robust. This palm has exceptional colours.
Washingtonia robusta
Origin: Its natural home is in the north of Mexico and the southwest of the USA.
Cultivation: The seeds can be grown indoors all year round. The seeds germinate easily and have a very long shelf life. Soak the seeds overnight in room-warm water and then spread them on moist growing soil or coconut fibre substrate. With even humidity and a temperature of 20° to 25° C, the first seeds often germinate after 2 weeks.
Location/light: Fan palms prefer bright to sunny spots both indoors and outdoors. From the 5th year onwards, they may even be exposed to temperatures as low as -5°C.
Care: Plant the young seedlings in nutritious compost or palm soil. As they quickly form many roots, they should be given a larger container from the start. Keep them evenly moist - but the soil may also dry out once in a while. From April to October, feed the palm with palm fertiliser at 14-day intervals.
Wintering: A bright place between 4° and 10° C in the staircase or conservatory is ideal. If there is enough space and temperatures are between 10° and 18° C, the fan palm can also be kept in a bright place indoors. If the air is too dry, you should spray the palm with low-lime water.
