Product details
The Traveler's Tree, with its fan-shaped leaves, makes a strikingly beautiful and amusing appearance. Its original name is Ravenala madagascariensis. The plant got its name because after rainfalls, about 1.5 liters of water can accumulate in the long leaf stalks. In emergencies, travelers could pierce the stalk to tap the water for drinking. This impressive plant belongs to the banana family.
Originally, the Traveler's Tree was only found in Madagascar. Today, it can be found throughout the tropics, even in Italy or perhaps in your home.
Sowing the seeds indoors is possible year-round. The seeds are covered with a natural blue waxy layer. Therefore, you should first wash them with soapy water and then pour hot water over them to stimulate germination. After that, soak the seeds in room-temperature water overnight. Then, plant the seeds 1 cm deep in moist seedling soil. With this pre-treatment, the seeds will germinate reliably and quickly in about 2 to 5 weeks.
The Ravenala loves a bright and sunny spot and can also be placed outdoors in a sheltered area during the summer; a little shade is beneficial.
For healthy growth, the plant needs a large pot or container with well-draining, nutrient-rich soil and plenty of water in the summer. From April to October, you should feed it with pot plant fertilizer every 2 to 3 weeks.
The tree is not frost-resistant and requires a bright location between 10° and 20° C. A conservatory is ideal. Indoors, you should occasionally mist the leaves due to the often dry heating air. You can cut off old brown leaves at the bottom of the stalk.
