Tibet Goji Berry
The small, summer-green shrub grows to about 2 to 3 meters tall and has slightly curved branches with only a few thorns. The purple flowers in June are followed by an abundance of approximately 2 cm large orange-red Goji berries starting in August.
In Europe, it is commonly known as wolfberry. The berries are very healthy. In Central Asia, the Goji fruit has long been considered a top choice. It contains 4,000 percent more antioxidants than oranges and more B vitamins than any other fruit. Experts are already calling it a true health and anti-aging sensation.
Lycium chinensis
Origin: Central Asia, China, and Tibet
Cultivation: Seeds can be sown indoors from January to autumn. Soak the seeds in water overnight, then sprinkle them over moist growing substrate and cover with clear plastic wrap until the first sprouts appear.
Location / Light: The Goji berry thrives in a sunny location in well-draining soils such as light mix or coconut soil. It even tolerates saline soil.
Care: The shrub grows quickly (up to 90 cm per year). During dry seasons, it should be watered generously once a week. From the third year onward, the Goji shrub will bear fruit, and pruning should be avoided.
Wintering: The plant is hardy down to -25 °C. In autumn, it is advisable to remove dead branches and twigs. In the spring of the second year, prune the bush so that only 6 main branches remain. It is best to provide snow protection in winter.
Caution: The genus Lycium belongs to the nightshade family (Solanaceae). As with the tomato plant, the plant parts are toxic, but of course, not the fruits.
