Product details
The peanut, the classic nut with a lot of flavor and a hard shell, is formed by the peanut plant, which is a shrub about 50 cm tall. After 2 months, the plant produces yellow flowers and self-pollinates. The flower stalks continue to grow and dip into the ground, where the peanuts develop, which are harvested after about 5 months. We have the Giant Peanut, which produces extremely large fruits.
Origin:
The largest cultivation areas are located in Africa, Brazil, and the USA.
Cultivation:
Seeds can be sown from January to October. Soak the seeds in room-temperature water for a few hours, then plant them in only slightly moist seedling soil. Place the seedling container in a very warm location and water only moderately. The germination period is between 5 days and 3 weeks.
Location / Light:
The plant thrives best in a bright west or south-facing window. It also grows outdoors only in summer.
Care:
A large pot diameter of 20 to 30 cm is required at a minimum to prevent the many peanuts from hindering each other later on. It is best to mix a loose soil of 2 parts potting soil and 1 part sand, which you should only water lightly. Fertilizer additions every 6 weeks are sufficient.
Overwintering:
The peanut does not need to be overwintered, as it is harvested before winter sets in.
Preparation:
When the leaves of the plant change color and wilt, the peanuts are ripe and the plant can be dug up. Spread the peanuts out to dry for 2 days and then separate the fruits from the "hay." Since the plant is annual, you can sow some of the harvested peanuts in spring to grow new plants. The remaining peanuts can be roasted in an oiled pan, salted to taste, and eaten.
