Orchid Tree

This beautiful little shrub or tree is grown for its lovely and fragrant flowers, which resemble orchids or butterflies. In English, the plant is also known as the "Camel-Foot-Tree" because its leaves are shaped exactly like a camel's hoof. The Orchid Tree produces countless pink flowers in spring and summer and can be excellently cultivated as a potted plant.

(Bauhinia variegata)

Origin: India.

Cultivation: Seeds can be sown indoors year-round. First, soak the seeds in room temperature water for about 12 hours, then press them flat onto moist seedling soil. The seeds should be covered only lightly with soil. With consistently moist soil and temperatures between 20° - 25° Celsius, the seeds will germinate in 2 - 4 weeks.

Location / Light: The plants thrive in bright to full sun locations. They also enjoy warm conditions but do not tolerate cold winds.

Care: The Orchid Tree flourishes excellently in light, fertile, and well-draining soil, such as a Light Mix. It develops a short trunk, and pruning (after flowering) is only necessary if growth is excessive. Water regularly and feed the plant with potting plant fertilizer (organic fertilizer) every 3 weeks from early April to late August.

Overwintering: The plant is only very slightly frost-resistant. In cooler and drier locations, it will shed its leaves in autumn. If space allows, it can overwinter at temperatures between 12° to 18° Celsius. Water lightly during the winter.

Seed pack with 8 seeds.
