MediterraneanCrested lavender
(Lavandula stoechas)
Fun Facts:The millennia-old plant grows to about 40-60 cm tall and develops into a small woody shrub. With its strikingly shaped, bright purple-purple crested flowers, it is an eye-catcher in any pot, box or rose bed. It is also very popular in the rock garden;
The flowers are narrow and blue-green. If the lavender is planted outdoors, leave a space of 40-50 cm between the individual plants so that they can develop freely. After flowering, a light pruning is possible and in the following spring a heavy pruning should be done.
Application:Harvesting of the leaves and flowers can be done from summer onwards. The leaves are suitable for seasoning poultry and fish. The flowers make a pleasant lavender tea that is antispasmodic and nervine. A öl can also be made. The dried flowers can be used to pack scents that are excellent for repelling annoying insects;
Origin:Native to western southern France, Madeira and Tenerife. Now also for your garden;
Growing:As a light seedling, spread the seeds on moist topsoil and press down. Simply sprinkle the surface to moisten. Indoors, germination takes about 3-4 weeks. Outdoor sowing should only be done in June or July when it is very warm outside;
Care:Lavender prefers warm and sunny locations. The soil may be calcareous. Soils that are well drained and sandy are ideal. As the lavender is not completely winter-hardy, you should give it a little winter protection.
