American Golden Cypress / 50 Seeds / Indoor Bonsai

(Cupressus macrocarpa 'Gold Crest')

Subtropical easy-care coniferous bonsai!

Fun Facts: Besides the cypresses common in the Mediterranean region, cypresses also thrive in the USA in California, Arizona, and Mexico. This subtropical Cupressus macrocarpa 'Gold Crest' forms greenish-yellow to yellow-gold colored needles and is much better suited for indoor cultivation as it can cope with more warmth, especially in winter. It is one of the low-maintenance bonsai, and its pyramidal growth lends itself to the upright form in the design as well as a forest design. Recently, this type of cypress has also been available in Switzerland.

The wintering temperatures must not fall below 6°C but can rise to 20°C. Keep the soil moist.

Origin: The Golden Cypress is native to the USA.

Breeding: Soak the seeds overnight in water and then plant them in slightly damp bonsai soil or in growing medium. Spread the seeds well, then cover with soil, press down, and keep evenly moist. Let the seedlings grow for another 3-4 months after germination so that the roots are not damaged when pricking out. The germination period is 2-6 weeks.

Position / Light: The plant loves bright to sunny places and can also be brought outside after the frost period.

Watering: The plant needs little water but should never dry out completely during the growing season. Water sparingly in winter. From March to October, water every 2-3 weeks with liquid bonsai fertilizer; in winter, only every 6 weeks.

Pruning: Pruning is possible all year round, but the period from March to May is best suited for this. You can regularly trim back the young shoot tips to one-third. If you want to shape the tree with wire, this should also be done in spring.

Soil: Normal indoor soil with a little sand is suitable. Our Seed Mix is also appropriate. You can also mix clay, peat, and sand in a ratio of 1:1:2.
