Dense spring sowing produces raclette or pearl onions, while thin sowing in August yields large, white, flat spring or summer onions.

Sowing takes place from March to early May in rows about 5 cm apart or broadcast (sow densely). The seeds should be covered with 1 cm of soil. In mild locations, sowing can also be done as winter onions (sowing in the second half of August, harvesting in spring and summer, with a row spacing of 30 cm).

Fertilize little or not at all, as otherwise the onions will grow too large.
