Overview: This simple device is primarily used to check the correct wiring of the pairs of wires (known as Wire Map) of a data cable at the components of structured cabling.

What is a Wire Map? This parameter checks the correct wiring of the individual pairs of wires in the outlet or patch panel, including the connection of the shielding in STP cabling. It also checks the signal transmission over the entire cable length – meaning it can indicate interruptions in individual conductors or short circuits. The Wire Map parameter is very important, but it cannot alone guarantee the flawless operation of the installed computer network. A very simple measuring device is sufficient to measure the correctness of the wiring.

What should be done if the Wire Map parameter indicates an error? First, the correct wiring of the individual conductors in the terminal should be checked. If the wiring is correct – that is, it conforms to the standardized schemes T568A or T568B and the Wire Map still shows an error, there could be several causes: a miswired conductor in the terminal, an interruption in the cable, or a short circuit. More advanced measuring devices can determine the fault location with a fairly high degree of accuracy during the evaluation of the measurement, thus simplifying the resolution of the problem.
